Eligibility

All eligible employees under the age of 65, who are actively covered under a Coughlin group insurance benefit, pension or individual plan are eligible to be covered under this plan.

Continuation of coverage  

Employees who are:  (1) laid-off on a temporary basis;  (2) temporarily absent from work due to short-term disability;  (3) on leave of absence;  (4) on maternity leave; or
(5) continue to maintain an affinity with Coughlin through its group insurance, pension or individual plans, may continue to be covered under this program.

Spouses and eligible dependant children can also be covered

Insured spouses can also receive a lump sum payment of up to $150,000 following the confirmed diagnosis of one of the 17 covered illnesses. 

Eligible dependant children can also receive $5,000 of critical illness insurance coverage automatically for just 75 cents more per month.  To be eligible, dependant children must be under age 21 and dependent on you for financial support, or age 25 if a full-time student at an accredited Canadian educational institution.

Coverage to age 65

Privileged Selection critical illness insurance coverage lasts until the earlier of age 65 or your termination of active participation in a Coughlin group insurance, pension or individual plan

Conversion

You can convert your Privileged Selection critical illness insurance policy to an individual policy from ACE INA Life Insurance, subject to review of evidence of insurability, provided you do so within the 31 following the termination of employment.

The individual policy will be effective either as of the date that ACE INA Life Insurance receives the application or on the date that coverage under the group policy ceases, whichever occurs later.  The premium will be the same as an insured person would ordinarily pay when applying for an individual policy at that time. 

The amount of critical illness insurance benefit converted to shall not exceed that amount issued during employment up to an all policies combined maximum of $25,000.
